Throw Out Fifty Things: Update #1

July 26, 2010

in 30-Minute Homemaker,30-Minute Organizer

I’ve finished the first chapter of Throw Out Fifty Things, and I’ve thrown out eleven. Here’s the count:

-Dress (I thought it looked cute until I caught a BLIMPSE of myself — misspelling on purpose! — in a mirror!)

-A pair of skivvies (sounds cuter than undies, doesn’t it?)

-Eyebrow pencil (I have no idea why I own an eyebrow pencil. Must have thought it was a good idea at the time!)

-T-shirt from a company I used to work for (it makes me sad every time I look at it)

-Box full of hangers that was sitting on my windowsill (since we moved in 6 months ago)

-The plastic storage box the hangers were in (I have no idea what happened to the top)

-Eyeliner fixative from MAC (I would like to be the kind of person who uses eyeliner fixative, but alas, I am not)

-Facial cleanser (I got it as a sample and found something I liked better)

-Half-used candle I didn’t like the smell of (replaced with a delicious-smelling candle!)

-Single earring I’d been hoping I’d find the mate to

-Cropped jeans that I got at Kohl’s and wasn’t too crazy about but I wanted a pair of cropped jeans (replaced by a nicer pair from JCrew that I was thrilled I could fit into after two weeks of Weight Watchers!)

As far as how this all feels, tossing stuff ALWAYS feels good. The hardest things for me to toss were the old t-shirt (I put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into that company!), but I took Gail Blanke’s advice to heart:

If you don’t know what to do with it, or where to put it or why you ever bought it in the first place, or if looking at it depresses you, throw it out! Never keep anything that makes you LOOK or FEEL heavy.”

That made it much easier to let it go. And I’ve already got my eye on a couple of non-physical things I want to get out of my life… stay tuned…

That’s funny, I’m doing a series of posts on organizing this week at my blog FasterCraft. Today’s post was all about figuring out what to get rid of.

Great start, you’ve motivated me to get in my closet. Why oh why do we keep things we can’t wear. Too guilty to get rid of because we spent good money on it? I am going to heed Gail’s advice. Great start. I also read if your closet is organized it sets the tone for your whole day. If it’s messy, well, you know the rest……. Good luck and thanks for sharing.

While I haven’t gotten the book yet, I’m starting to purge and it feels good! Thanks for the inspiration, Lain!

I’m so busted. I can’t believe I admitted that I’m doing 50 items per day instead of 50 items total. That shows how cluttered my house is!

I’m counting individual pieces of paper, though, so that’s not AS bad, right? ;)

Interesting thoughts on the t-shirt. I have some from an old business that makes me angry every time I see them hanging in my closet. I don’t know why they’re still there but they are going in the trash ASAP!

P.S. You do let guys post here, right?
