Just a quick link for you today:

Borders Bookstores just announced their summer reading challenge for kids, called “Double Dog Dare.” Kids just read 10 books this summer to earn a free one!

Check out all the details here.

Some of my fave summer reads for kids (ironically, these will link you to Amazon. Haha!):

Diary of a Wimpy Kid. If your child hasn’t read this hilarious graphic novel yet, you can reward him/her with a trip to see the movie after. I really enjoyed it, too! Ages 7-12.

The Lightning Thief. I credit this book for getting both my kids interested in Greek mythology, something I’ve been trying to do for years! Ages 8-14.

Little Oink. This and the other picture books by Amy Krouse Rosenthal are simply adorable. Age: Preschool.

All-American Girl. Meg Cabot has long been one of my favorite “chick lit” authors, and this book for tweens and teens is hilarious, memorable, and just downright fun. AND when I a fan letter to Ms. Cabot, she wrote back — cementing her in my heart forever. Ages: Tweens/teens. (P.S. We listened to it on CD and my son enjoyed it, too)

Gregor The Overlander (Underland Chronicles, Book 1). Another fantasy/sci fi book that captivated my two older kids and me as well. Ages 8-12.

The Hunger Games. One of the highlights of this summer for my son and me will be the release of the third book in the Hunger Games series. Not for the weak of heart. Ages 12-16.

What books are your kids loving right now?

LOVED the Hunger Games (and Catching Fire)..already pre-ordered the last book from B&N, they are having a midnight celebration :-) My 11 year old is an avid reader, but only reads in bed at night, for hours I am sure. This book actually brought her to the couch in the middle of the day, of course that made me curious enough to download it onto my Kindle. I snuck Catching Fire out of her backpack so that I could read it while she was at school :-) Fablehave series, Ligthning Thief, Erogon…all series she is reading right now.

Thanks for the link to the Borders reading challenge. My 8 year old son also enjoys the Wimpy Kid books and the Percy Jackson series (he’s about to finish the 4th book). It’s also inspired an interest in mythology, which is really cool. Now he plays out Greek god scenarios with a couple of other kids during recess. Good thing they are in the the G&T program together in the fall because not all of the kids are into mythology! He finished the Harry Potter series a few months ago. I really need to find him another series to read, so thanks for the Underland Chronicles and The Hunger Games suggestions. The boy loves to read!

I’m not sure if you can get these in the US, but they’re published by Allen & Unwin in Australia and NZ, so armed with this info I expect you can find them: The Garth Nix series “Keys to the Kingdom” is great fun – there are 7 books, one for each day of the week. It’s a fantasy ‘can this kid save the world(s)’ scenario, very well realised with a great cast of characters. Age 11-16 (and adults too!). Garth Nix’s other books – especially his Abhorsen trilogy, are also well worth checking out (for slightly older readers – 14+.
