Got just five minutes? Instead of checking your email, tackle ONE of these kitchen jobs:
- Organize your spices. Take all of your spice jars and bottles out of their hidey-hole, wipe off the cabinet or surface you store them on, and put them back. Take note of any that are running low (don’t want to be out of oregano when you’re trying to whip up quick pot of spaghetti!)
- Wipe off your kitchen chairs. If your kids are anything like mine, the food flies at mealtime! Take a few minutes to do a wipe down. Spray them with a multi-purpose cleaner first, then attack with a nylon “scrubby” sponge
or a microfiber towel
.
- Deep-clean your sink. Start with an all-purpose cleaner and water. For stuck-on yuckies, spray and let it sit for a while. Then use that cool nylon scrubby to get the gunk off. To deodorize the drain, pour a half-cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by a cup of white vinegar. Let it sit and fizz for a bit, and then pour a kettleful of boiling water on top, rinsing down the baking soda/vinegar mixture.
- Discover a new recipe or two. Pull down a cookbook or flip through your magazine clippings to find a new recipe to try this week. Add it to your meal plan, and add any needed items to your grocery list.
- Clean out the leftovers. Take a quick tour through your fridge, pulling out all the leftovers. Dump the “mystery meals,” and neatly replace the stuff that’s still good. I’ve heard of keeping a list on the refrigerator door of leftovers and their “eat by” dates so your family knows what’s available when they’re looking for a midnight snack.
- Organize your freezer. We have one of those below-refrigerator drawer-type freezers, and things tend to drop to the bottom, never to be seen again. I periodically pull everything out and rotate what’s there so I can use up meats and veggies before they drift off to freezer-burn heaven. If you’ve got a huge freezer, this task might take you a bit longer, but you’ll be glad you did it!
