As a mom AND a germophobe, I’m constantly on guard against the slightest possibility of a germ infection. I wash my hands about a zillion times a day (I kept careful count) and I should own stock in Purell.
So I was a bit dismayed when I heard that hand sanitizers don’t really work all that well. How was I going to protect my kids (and myself!) if I couldn’t spritz away the bad bugs?
Well, one thing you can do is to avoid germy spots. And according to my careful research (from Woman’s Day Magazine), here are six of the germiest places:
1. Shopping carts… E. coli was found on 80 percent of shopping carts in a recent study. Ewwww! E. coli… that’s the poopoo bacteria. Ick, big time. Suddenly, those moms putting the cart covers on shopping cart cover before dropping the baby in the seat don’t look like crazy helicopter parents!
2. The cutting board. You’d be better off cutting veggies on your toilet seat! Double ick. Clean yours with a bleach and water solution, and have a separate board for meats and fruits/vegetables.
3. First-floor elevator button. I use my knuckle to push elevator buttons and ATM keys. Call me crazy.
4. ATM Enter key. See! I wrote the hint on #3 before I knew that!
5. Your desktop. Just because they’re YOUR germs doesn’t make them clean.
6. Playground. The most dangerous thing on the playground isn’t the monkey bars, it’s the fecal matter (poopoo again!) ON the monkey bars. Wash, early and often.
Excuse me now. I’ve got to go wash my hands.
