So what’s with all the talk about saving time anyway? What’s the point of trying to get things done in 30 minutes?

When I think about the point of doing things more quickly, I think of the last lines of one of my favorite books, Cheaper by the Dozen (Just for the record, though I love the movie with Steve Martin, nothing beats the original book, published decades ago).

The father of the clan of a dozen children, Frank Gilbreth was an efficiency expert. and when people would ask him what he was so intent on shaving a minute here and a minute there for, he’d answer, “For work, if you love that best…For education, for beauty, for art, for pleasure…For mumblety-peg, if that’s where your heart lies.”

I’ve read that book at least ten times over the past three decades, and that line brings tears to my eyes every single time (and I am NOT a crier!). He got it — he knew that the why was an individual choice, and whether someone was using their “extra time” to weed their garden or rock babies in the NICU or do crossword puzzles or solve world hunger, it didn’t matter. What mattered is that you were making time for the things that you loved. THAT is what makes this world a better place.

So if you’re wondering about what your motivation for speeding things up is, look to where your heart lies. i want you to spend less time on chores and get more done so you can enjoy your family more and have the opportunity to do what fulfills you, whatever that might be. Even if that’s mumblety-peg.

P.S. If you’re wondering what my mumblety-peg is, part of my “saved” time is spent scrapbooking. It’s a hobby (obsession?) I love because of the way I can combine story-telling, creativity, and two of my favorite things, paper and pens! If you’d like to see more of my scrapbooking, you’re welcome at Layout A Day. You won’t be surprised to know that one of my specialties is 30-minute scrapbook pages!

I’ve finished the first chapter of Throw Out Fifty Things, and I’ve thrown out eleven. Here’s the count:

-Dress (I thought it looked cute until I caught a BLIMPSE of myself — misspelling on purpose! — in a mirror!)

-A pair of skivvies (sounds cuter than undies, doesn’t it?)

-Eyebrow pencil (I have no idea why I own an eyebrow pencil. Must have thought it was a good idea at the time!)

-T-shirt from a company I used to work for (it makes me sad every time I look at it)

-Box full of hangers that was sitting on my windowsill (since we moved in 6 months ago)

-The plastic storage box the hangers were in (I have no idea what happened to the top)

-Eyeliner fixative from MAC (I would like to be the kind of person who uses eyeliner fixative, but alas, I am not)

-Facial cleanser (I got it as a sample and found something I liked better)

-Half-used candle I didn’t like the smell of (replaced with a delicious-smelling candle!)

-Single earring I’d been hoping I’d find the mate to

-Cropped jeans that I got at Kohl’s and wasn’t too crazy about but I wanted a pair of cropped jeans (replaced by a nicer pair from JCrew that I was thrilled I could fit into after two weeks of Weight Watchers!)

As far as how this all feels, tossing stuff ALWAYS feels good. The hardest things for me to toss were the old t-shirt (I put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into that company!), but I took Gail Blanke’s advice to heart:

If you don’t know what to do with it, or where to put it or why you ever bought it in the first place, or if looking at it depresses you, throw it out! Never keep anything that makes you LOOK or FEEL heavy.”

That made it much easier to let it go. And I’ve already got my eye on a couple of non-physical things I want to get out of my life… stay tuned…

July 22, 2010

Can you believe that summer is half over? The good thing is, there’s also half of it left! (Yes, I am an optimist!). My lemonade pitcher is definitely HALF-FULL!! Earlier this week I was interviewed on how to make the rest of summer fan-tan-tastic. My friend Deanna Collins did a great job of getting all [...]

Crossing Things off the List

July 15, 2010

One of my 5-year-old’s dreams for this summer was to go to Storyland, a small amusement park aimed at young kids, located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We had been warned that my 12- and 10-year-olds probably wouldn’t be too interested in the goings-on, because everything was fairytale-themed and fairly tame. So this [...]
